Our Founder’s Story

When Kathryn sustained a spinal cord injury in 2011, she was told she’d never walk again.

She was lucky. After 4 years bed-bound, she slowly regained mobility. Though she learned to walk again, she still requires assistance if she’s going to be up and about for any length of time.

That’s when she became hyperaware of how inaccessible much of the physical world is. 

• Abled people using (and taking their time in) the handicapped stall in the bathroom
• Elevators that don’t work or won’t take you to the floor you need
• Doorways that have steps or other obstacles
• Store isles that are too narrow to navigate

But that wasn’t her first battle with accessibility issues.

For many years, Kathryn couldn’t use computers because they triggered seizures. She had to watch from the sidelines as the world raved about each new technological advance — which was a kick in the head because she had been an early computer geek, writing macros and playing with code before she had to hang up her mouse.

Kathryn no longer has a seizure disorder, and she has no trouble navigating the Web (except for occasional essential tremor flare-up). But for the millions of people with disabilities such as visual, hearing, or physical impairment — even ADHD, dyslexia, or seizures — navigating the Web is difficult, dangerous, or impossible.

Too many websites and apps are simply inaccessible to people with digital disabilities. They’re being left behind through no fault of their own.

But we can make a difference.
